A cage-bound bird doesn’t leave the cage, even if the door is open. [Art by Arjun Bhattacharya]

If you are feeling trapped, please talk to someone.

No matter how much money you make or how successful you are, you are not happy unless you are free. Everything you do is ultimately in the cause of freedom. You work late to impress someone to get a better job so you can do what you want and make more money. Because you want to be free.

The yearning to be free is simply an expression of our true nature. Each of us is an expression of the Infinite, for which we have many words — Love, Truth, Beauty — but the most basic expression of the Infinite is Freedom. Every creature wants to be free.

Research shows that a social life is a long life. This doesn’t have to be a big network of friends/family — it includes chatting with your barista or a conversation at work. These connections don’t bind us , they set us free. They allow us to express ourselves. More than health or wealth, it is this social contact which keeps you well and happy.

If a bird lives in a cage long enough, it won’t leave, even if you open the door. We feel trapped because we have forgotten that we are free. A child or a dog or a smile can remind us. And if you remember your freedom, you can deal with absolutely anything.

If you are feeling trapped, please connect with someone. It is always people who save us — not ideas or books or TED talks. And I don’t want to lose any more good people.
